Pygeum and Prostate Health

Some limited evidence suggests possible short-term symptom benefit, but the research base has important limitations.

What to know

Benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH) is noncancerous enlargement of the prostate. It can contribute to frequent or urgent urination, nighttime urination, difficulty starting, a slow or weak stream, and incomplete bladder emptying. These symptoms are not specific to BPH, so diagnosis matters.

Evidence and treatment context

NIDDK describes established BPH management as including watchful waiting, lifestyle changes, medicines, and surgery depending on symptoms and clinical circumstances. For supplements, evidence is ingredient-specific and often limited. NCCIH says saw palmetto alone probably does not improve BPH urinary symptoms; evidence for pygeum is limited and based substantially on small, short studies.

Seek prompt medical care if you cannot urinate at all. Persistent, painful, bloody, fever-associated, or worsening urinary symptoms also warrant medical evaluation.
